Oman’s First Sports Coaching Symposium by Al Riyami

In a landmark event for Oman’s sports coaching industry, the Oman Olympic Committee, represented by the Oman Olympic Academy, successfully organized the first specialized symposium titled “Designing Training Plans – Periodization.” This symposium, led by Dr. Shihab Al-Din bin Ahmed Al-Riyami, a prominent figure in sports training, was held over three days at Sultan Qaboos University and the Oman Olympic Academy.

The symposium was part of the National Coach Certification Programme (NCCP), an initiative aimed at enhancing and developing the capabilities of sports coaches in Oman. This program is vital for building a robust base of qualified trainers in sports training. It provided coaches with a significant opportunity to gain new knowledge and experience, hone their skills, and ultimately contribute to improving the performance and technical levels of athletes in Oman.

Dr. Shihab Al-Din bin Ahmed Al-Riyami, the director of the NCCP and a certified international lecturer for sports training, presented the symposium. His involvement underscores the high caliber of training and expertise shared during the event. A total of 16 coaches from various sectors, including sports federations, clubs, the military sports sector, and academic institutions, participated in the symposium.

The symposium’s curriculum included a blend of theoretical and practical components. Its primary goal was to provide the participants with a comprehensive understanding of various sciences and studies related to sports training. Key topics covered included the design and importance of sports training plans, time planning for training, main elements of training preparation, and the development of annual plans and their sections. Moreover, the symposium emphasized the application of the NCCP program in designing seasonal training plans and included a session where participants presented visual presentations for evaluation.

This symposium is not just a singular event but part of a broader strategy of the NCCP, which aims to assimilate international training programs and methodologies, including those from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. As a pioneering sports project in Oman, it plays a crucial role in creating a large base of qualified coaches for various sports, encompassing both basic and advanced levels, as well as specialized seminars.

The success of this symposium marks a significant milestone in the advancement of sports coaching in Oman, setting a precedent for future educational initiatives and reinforcing Oman’s commitment to elevating its sports training standards to international levels.
